MAS vs Air Asia

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

From May 5th, Malaysia Airlines is offering zero fares on all routes within Malaysia. Passenger only needs to pay for airport tax and surcharges. To get these special fares, you need to purchase the ticket online thru their website at least 30 days before the departure date and the tickets are non-refundable & the flights date cannot be changed.

With a ticket price a lot cheaper compared to the normal price, passenger is allocated 20kg check-in baggage allowance, free meal on board and an allocated seat with seat number (no fighting for your preferred seat).

Meanwhile Air Asia offer even lower than Zero fare. Air Asia also offers to pay the difference to any of its passengers if they can find any MAS airfare that is lower than the cheapest offered by Air Asia. This airlines is going to even lower the price of its ticket by introducing sub-zero Fare campaign that will be launched soon.

I went to their websites (MAS & Air Asia) and found out it is cheaper to fly with Air Asia if you are flying alone. For example: I am flying from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bahru on Nov. 1st and coming back on Nov. 21st. Air Asia price is $122.00 RM and Malaysia Airlines will charge me $152.00 RM.

If I am traveling with Joshua, Air Asia charges $30.00 one-way and it will cost me $182.00 RM ($122.00 + $60.00). Malaysia Airlines on the other hand will only charge me $10.00 extra for surcharge and costing me $162.00 RM ($152.00 + $10.00). Maybe I am biased but I will definitely fly with MAS, how about you? Which airline is better?
